The Great Diamond Hoax of 1872 took place along the 40th Parallel in Moffat County Colorado. The scam involved salting a sandstone outcrop with diamonds, rubies, garnets and possibly other gemstones. The perpetrators swindled prominent Civil War Generals, a US Senator and two presidential candidates - and was one of the few times in history that politicians were swindled by taxpayers.
